A Balinese dance class is an educational and cultural experience where participants learn the traditional dance forms of Bali, an Indonesian island known for its rich artistic heritage. These dance classes offer an opportunity to immerse oneself in the unique and captivating world of Balinese performing arts.

Balinese dance is a combination of storytelling, spirituality, and physical expression. It is deeply rooted in the island’s Hindu culture, history, and mythology. The dances often depict stories from Hindu epics, local legends, or religious ceremonies. They are performed in various settings, such as temple festivals, cultural events, and tourist performances.

In a Balinese dance class, participants can expect to learn about the following aspects:

Technique: Balinese dance is characterized by intricate hand and finger gestures, body movements, and facial expressions. Students will be taught the proper body alignment, footwork, and graceful movements that are essential to the dance form.

Costumes and Makeup: Balinese dance classes usually cover the traditional attire and makeup worn by dancers. The costumes are colorful and intricate, often featuring vibrant fabrics, intricate patterns, and various accessories. Makeup plays a significant role in enhancing the dancer’s expressions and is designed to represent different characters or emotions.

Music and Rhythms: Balinese dance is accompanied by traditional Gamelan music, which is an ensemble of percussive instruments. Students will learn about the unique rhythms and melodies that accompany different dance styles and how to synchronize their movements with the music.

Storytelling and Symbolism: Balinese dances often convey stories or symbolize certain beliefs and values. Students will be introduced to the narratives behind the dances and the significance of specific movements and gestures in conveying these stories.

Cultural Context: Balinese dance classes provide an insight into the island’s rich cultural heritage and the role of dance in Balinese society. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the spiritual and religious aspects of the dance forms and their connection to Balinese Hinduism.

I showed up and was the only one there—so yeah, I was definitely skeptical at first. But then Bojest arrived. And let me tell you, this man is overflowing with passion for his culture. If there were a PhD in Balinese tradition, he’d have earned it ten times over. The level of dedication he’s poured into perfecting the art is honestly incredible—and he’s so humble about it, too. He taught me an entire dance in just 1.5 hours. That’s how good he is. So seriously, just show up. Yes, it’s different. Yes, it’s uncomfortable to try something new. But once you start learning the delicate details and the intention behind each movement, you can’t help but develop a deep respect for it. And if you’re the kind of person who gets lit up by other people’s passion—go meet Bojest. You won’t regret it.

Loved the whole experience of the Balinese dance class. Our driver, Nyoman was punctual, friendly and shared lots of information about Balinese culture on our drive. It was just my friend and me in the class so there was no hiding 🙂. The teacher, Made, was amazing. He demonstrated the dance, broke it down into pieces and repeated it as many times as we needed. He explained the purpose of the 'welcome' dance (what we learned) and showed us other song and dance. It was hard work but we both really enjoyed it. I really liked that Made corrected is when needed and repeated it until we got it. I feel I have a much greater appreciation of the importance of dance to Balinese culture and its intricacies than I did before.
